Stone Station was built by the North Staffordshire Railway Company and opened on 1 May 1849 to coincide with the opening of the line to Colwich and the south. A previous temporary station that had operated in Newcastle Road on the branch to Norton Bridge and Stafford station was closed on the same date. (The Colwich platforms were removed in 1947).
The building ceased to operate as a railway station in the late 1990's and for several years was allowed to fall into disrepair. Thankfully, the building was refurbished for community use by Stone Town Council as a result of financial contributions from the Heritage Lottery Fund, the Railway Heritage Trust and Onyx Environmental Trust. It re-opened as a community centre in 2003.
In 2004, the train service operated by Central Trains was withdrawn. For the next four years, local individuals, Stone Town Council, the North Staffordshire Rail Promotion Group and many others campaigned for the return of the service. Their hard work was rewarded when, in December 2008, train services were re-introduced under the franchise operated by London Midland.
